Bring a picnic and your beloved and enjoy a romantic sunset. Budget: Does the Oamaru Backpackers have one of the best views in town? Quite possibly. There are climbing tracks with good gradients to get to the two high points. A spectacular walk taking you up to the aptly named Lookout Point, here you can look over the harbour and out to the Pacific Ocean. This walk is steep going up and can be slippery after rain, alternatively, drive to Lookout Point and take a walk on the track around the Cape and visit a former gun emplacement.

This wetland lagoon is an important habitat for many wetland bird species and is recognised as an area of Natural Significance in this Karst landscape.

Head south. Designed by Dunedin architect Robert Lawson in , the building forms a handsome pair in limestone with its equally imposing neighbour, the National Bank. Both have luxuriant acanthus leaves. Kakanui is famous for its stunning sunflowers field. This field has played host to many a photographer and film crew over the years.

Another feature is the Wonderland Statue donated to the children of Oamaru in by Robert Milligan, the statue is located in the Wonderland Garden. The summer house or conservatory is a popular place for romance.

Look for original garden objects such as a sundial, croquet lawns and a wishing well. Our favourite is the peacock house. We can visualise those feathers in the ornate Victorian hats.

Penguins visit the Blue Penguin Colony. The Oamaru penguin colony has seating set up around the nesting site. You are welcome to watch the penguins return from the sea in groups with the setting sun. Wind-sheared scrub, dominated by hebe, ngaio, mahoe and broadleaf, clings to the cliffs and shelters penguins, other seabirds and a variety of insects. A unique flora and fauna exists here — a number of native plants and insects are at either their southern or northern geographical limit.

Adult penguins return to feed their young at any time of the day. You can also regularly see New Zealand fur seals, with New Zealand sea lions and elephant seals occasional visitors to the beach. No dogs are allowed in the reserve. Keep at least 20 m distance from marine wildlife. Follow a minute zig-zag track to the top of a cliff with some great viewing of a seal colony on the rocks below.

Continue onwards to a viewing hide where you can watch yellow-eyed penguins on the beach usually between 3pm and 9am. Yellow-eyed penguins swim as far as 50 kilometres off-shore and dive up to metres for their food which they find mainly near the seabed.

The Trail has more than 20 sites related to landforms, distinctive rocks, minerals, and fossils. Vanished World localities range from Waianakarua to Oamaru on the coast, and inland to Duntroon.
