A guild based on warrior spirit and fighting, it's one of the more generic paths for players to choose. Although the Companions are the most well-known thanks to their central location in Whiterun, many of their smaller details and secrets tend to go unnoticed or even unappreciated by fans. Even after hundreds of hours into Skyrim , it's possible to find something new about this band of brave warriors. Bounties are a pretty self-explanatory thing in Skyrim. Committing theft or murder in a specific hold will always send the hold guards running after the player.
Once caught, they'll be asked to pay their bounty in the name of the local Jarl. However, things are a bit different when it comes to Jorrvaskr. Although the faction's territory is in Whiterun, they have a very separate system.
The Companions won't hunt down the player for a bounty they have in Whiterun's hold, and will instead go by their own bounty system which takes into account what the player does inside Jorrvaskr. Random encounters contribute a great deal of fun to any playthrough because players will never quite know what they can expect to find in the wilds.
When first entering Whiterun, they'll most likely see the Companions taking on a giant and have the choice to help them fight it. However, it's also possible to catch members of the Companions in other places all around Skyrim, fighting Sabre Cats or even wolves. These encounters are a bit rarer, but they still give the faction a spark of realism and agency.
If a member of the Companions is taken as a follower, there's one area in which they have a very different kind of behavior to more typical followers, like mercenaries.
During brawls in particular, if the Dragonborn challenges someone to a fistfight, most followers will just stand there with their weapon drawn. However, the Companions are unique in this regard. They'll stand on the edge of the fight and even shout encouragement to the Dragonborn during the bout. This is just another way in which the characters in this faction feel so much more alive than many other NPCs and their repetitive actions.
Farkas and Vilkas are quite the iconic pair when it comes to the Companions. This article is about the Companions faction. For companions for the player, see Followers. The Companions are a group of warriors who take on private and public contracts for the people of Skyrim, and who purportedly carry on the tradition of the Five Hundred Companions of Ysgramor.
Although the two groups offer a similar service, the Fighters Guild historically had a strong presence in Skyrim until the Companions seemingly replaced it entirely in the Fourth Era. They are based in the city of Whiterun , within the mead hall Jorrvaskr. The most elite members are included in the Circle of Jorrvaskr, and the chief councilor and arbitrator is known as the Harbinger, after Ysgramor, the "harbinger of us all" and the only real recognized leader of the Companions.
Each new Harbinger is chosen by the last. To learn more of the Companions and their history, see the lore article. This is an ancient and honored mead hall where generations of the Companions have met. According to local legend, Jorrvaskr is actually the oldest building in Whiterun. When you come to, visit Aela and she will ask for your help defeating a group of werewolf hunters located in Gallows Rock. Take down the Silver Hand members in the cave and make your way to the leader, Krev the Skinner.
He comes with two guards, so if you would like to transform into a werewolf, now would be a good time. After a sad scene with Aela, you must complete two more Radiant Quests in order to continue on with the Companions Quests. Speak with any main members in order to begin them. In this section, we'll go over the objectives and procedure of the "Blood's Honor" quest in Skyrim. Visit Kodlak after completing two Radiant Quests and speak with him for a little while.
When you enter the cave, the first Glenmoril Witch is close by. She has very powerful frost spells, so try to get a sneak attack in before she sees you. When you defeat the first one, you are technically done with the quest after retrieving her head, but you can defeat the others in the cave if you want more experience or loot.
Head back to Whiterun and go towards Jorrvaskr. Apparently, the Silver Hand has attacked the home base and killed more members in order to steal the Fragments of Wuuthrad you have collected. You are scolded for not being there during the ambush, but Aela begins to understand what Kodlak was seeking.
The Glenmoril quest was not in vain, but it is now postponed until vengeance is wrought on the Silver Hand and the pieces of Wuuthrad are reclaimed. In this section, we'll go over the objectives and procedure of the "Purity of Revenge" quest in Skyrim.
Vilkas asks you to accompany him to the Silver Hand headquarters in Driftshade Refuge. It is a fairly long trek by foot to the cave, which is located south of Dawnstar. Fast travel closer if possible, or take a horse to make the journey faster. Run into battle as soon as you arrive, since there are guards all around the entrance. You are not required to wipe out every enemy here, but you may as well in memory of your fallen comrades. Enter the cave and seek out the Silver Hand inside. The stolen Fragments of Wuuthrad are found farther inside the caverns, but be careful of ambushes and traps on the way.
To reach Driftshade Cellar, activate a lever to the right of some spears in the first area. Release any werewolves if you want, then pass through the snowy tunnels back into the cellar area. Now enter into the large hall area and defeat more Silver Hand, then head south into the refuge area. Head left to find the remaining Silver Hand members and the pieces of Wuuthrad that were stolen.
In this section, we'll go over the objectives and procedure of the "Glory of the Dead" quest in Skyrim. Return to the group in Jorrvaskr and attend the funeral of Kodlak. Return the pieces to Eorlund and head to the Underforge to speak with the Companions. Vilkas suggests that they respect his final wishes by visiting the Tomb of Ysgramor, a place that Harbinger souls travel to get to Sovngarde. After the blade is reforged, Eorlund gives it to you and the group sets off.
The entrance to the Tomb of Ysgramor is northwest of Winterhold in the ice fields. Once inside, place the weapon in the hands of the statue to open the door to the north.
You will be exploring the cavern without Vilkas, but the others will be accompanying you. Slay the ghosts of the Companions past as you head towards the double doors to the west.
